QV Movie Review (with SPOILERS): Interstellar in IMAX 3.5 / 5

Interstellar is a good movie trying to pose as a good film.

I'm very glad I saw it, but it won't have repeat value for me. It is - without a doubt - a visual masterpiece. Unfortunately, most of the complimentary things I will say about it surround this one tent pole.

THE PLOT:
It tried to cover too much ground. Stretching from the desolation of Earth by a mysterious 'blight' causing food production to suffer - to the far distant future where mankind is a spare-faring race that has successfully colonized multiple worlds through the eye of a wormhole. Don't get me wrong... this subject matter is appealing to me, but in the context of a single story a few hours long in the telling - it suffers. By comparison, take the starting point of a movie like Event Horizon. There was no need to spend 30 mins to an hour explaining why mankind was attempting the space faring and exploration. It wouldn't have supported the plot enough to merit the time on the screen to tell about it.

Much like Inception, the plot was fractious and riddled with moments where there were sudden breaks from hyper realism with metaphoric representations made manifest. On top of that, it's filled with scenes of prolonged tension where the outcomes are generally predictable.

This really was two movies smashed together: one was a space opera and the other was a drama about family and the bonds of love.

THE VISUALS:
Chris Nolan doesn't do visuals poorly. There are some genuinely breathtaking moments on screen with nearly religious impact. Seeing this particular movie in IMAX is money well spent.

THE MUSIC:
Fell short. It has brief, grandiose moments but very long stretches of highly anticipatory, 'uncomfortable' music which works well in short bursts but not over long periods of time. This was not entirely the fault of the musical score, however. There were long stretches of the film where elongated action sequences required tense music.

THE ACTING:
I can watch Anne Hathaway in just about any role - and be really entertained.

Matthew McConaughey is always pretty to look at, but when it comes to dramatic roles he is lacking something in depth.

Michael Cane is lots of fun, but his is not the character and voice of a super intelligent scientist. Here are some other dudes that could have pulled off "scientist" in a better way IMHO:
